Short answer: if you already pay $20 to $40 a month for AI, or spend real money on API tokens, a 12GB GPU upgrade for the PC you own usually pays for itself in 1 to 2 years and keeps your data private. If you only use AI a few times a week, or you need the smartest frontier model, stay on a cloud plan. Most people do best with both.
What cloud AI can do that local AI can't
- Frontier reasoning and coding: top models like GPT-6, Claude Opus, Gemini 4 and Grok 4.7 handle multi-file code changes, tricky math and long research chains that an 8B to 14B model on a 12GB card will get wrong or give up on.
- Huge context windows: Claude Pro and Google AI Pro offer 1 million token windows and grok-4.7 has 500k, so you can paste a whole book or codebase. A 12GB GPU running a 14B model usually tops out around 8k to 32k tokens before it slows to a crawl or runs out of memory.
- Live web search: cloud chat apps look things up right now (news, prices, docs). A local model only knows what it was trained on unless you wire up search yourself.
- Top quality images and video: Google AI Pro, ChatGPT and Grok Imagine make polished images and video clips. Local image models run on a 12GB card but are slower and video is mostly out of reach.
- Voice: real-time talk-back voice modes on your phone, with no setup.
- Agents and tools: deep research, coding agents, browsing and app connectors that run for minutes or hours on cloud machines.
- No hardware limits: works the same on a phone, a Chromebook or a 10 year old laptop. Nothing to buy, cool or update.
What local AI does better
- Privacy and offline use: prompts, client files, medical or money questions never leave your PC, and it keeps working with the internet down.
- No monthly fee: Ollama and open models are free. You pay once for hardware, then a few dollars of electricity.
- No rate limits: no "you have hit your limit, try again later". Run it all day.
- Custom and uncensored models: pick from thousands of open models, coding tunes, small fast models or ones with fewer refusals, and swap any time. No one can retire your favorite model.
- Automation on your own files: point a script at a folder and summarize 500 PDFs, rename photos, tag spreadsheets or draft replies overnight, with no per token bill.
Why running both is the smart setup
You do not have to pick one. The cheapest, most useful setup for most people is a local model for the everyday and private work, plus one cloud plan (or pay per token) for the hard stuff. That often lets you drop from two or three subscriptions to one, or from a $100 plan to a $20 plan.
- Local: private documents, first drafts, emails, summaries, bulk or repetitive jobs, quick coding questions, anything you would not paste into a website.
- Cloud: the hardest problems, big codebases, research with live sources, images and video, voice on the go.
| Task | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize tax forms, medical or client files | Local | Private, never leaves your PC |
| First drafts of emails, posts, letters | Local | Good enough, free, unlimited |
| Bulk jobs: 500 files, tagging, renaming | Local | No token bill, no rate limit |
| Quick coding help, explain an error | Local | Fast on a 12GB GPU |
| Works with no internet | Local | Runs offline |
| Big multi-file code changes | Cloud | Frontier reasoning, huge context |
| Research with current sources | Cloud | Live web search |
| High quality images and video | Cloud | Best models need data center GPUs |
| Voice chat on your phone | Cloud | Built in, no setup |

What local AI costs in electricity
An RTX 3060 12GB is rated at 170W. With the rest of the PC, figure about 250W from the wall while it is answering. The Texas average residential rate was 15.91 cents per kWh in August 2026 (EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, released Oct 23, 2026).
- 2 hours of active use a day: 250W x 2h x 30 days = 15 kWh, about $2.39 a month.
- Heavy use, 6 hours a day: 45 kWh, about $7.16 a month.
Most of the day the model just sits idle, so real bills are usually lower.
Break-even calculator
Example: at $30 a month for SuperGrok, a $300 RTX 3060 12GB and about $2.39 of power, break-even is about 11 months, and you are about $31 ahead after 1 year and $363 after 2 years. At $20 a month it takes about 18 months.
Who should NOT go local
- You use AI a few times a week. The free tiers or one $20 plan are cheaper than any hardware.
- You need the best model on hard problems every day (big codebases, research, long documents). Keep a cloud plan.
- Your only computer is a laptop with 8GB to 16GB of RAM and no upgrade path. Buying a full PC just for AI takes years to pay back.
- You want image and video generation, live web search and voice in one app with zero setup.
- You do not want to touch settings at all. Local AI is easy now, but it is still a 20 minute install.
Not sure? Start free: install Ollama on the PC you have, see what it can run, and only then decide on a GPU.
FAQ
Is local AI cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?
Over time, often yes. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month ($240 a year). If you already own a decent PC, local AI with Ollama is free software and a 12GB GPU upgrade can pay for itself in about 1 to 2 years at that spend, faster if you pay for several plans or API tokens. If you would have to buy a whole new PC just for AI, a $20 plan is usually cheaper.
How much electricity does local AI use?
A PC with an RTX 3060 12GB draws roughly 250W from the wall while generating (the card is rated 170W). Two hours of active use a day is about 15 kWh a month, or about $2.40 at the Texas average of 15.91 cents per kWh. Idle time costs much less.
Is local AI as smart as GPT, Claude or Grok?
No. The best cloud models are still smarter on hard reasoning and long coding tasks. Open models in the 8B to 14B range that fit a 12GB to 16GB GPU are very good for everyday chat, writing, summaries and coding help, but they are not frontier models.
Can I use both local and cloud AI?
Yes, and most people should. Run private and everyday tasks locally for free, and keep a cheap cloud plan or pay per token for the hard problems. That mix often cuts a monthly AI bill a lot.
Does local AI work offline?
Yes. Once a model is downloaded, Ollama runs with no internet connection, no rate limits and no account. Your prompts and files never leave your PC.
